It takes forever so don't wait. Additionally, every 10 levels unlocks a new composing slot, which greatly speeds up leveling up.
Spam 20xp composing pots - which give the highest XP / Gold, XP / frags, and XP / Time ratio (for early composing levels).

At higher composing levels, you may switch to spamming higher xp potions for more xp per brewing time. This happens because brew time has a minimum of 60 minutes. However, note that this comes at higher gold and fragment costs.

I highly recommend using Instant Finish if you are not yet at Level 20 composing, and have not purchased both upgrade packs. It takes a very long time (3 months to level 10, another 3 months to level 20) to reach a level where you can begin composing very useful potions.
Instant finish costs gold equal to the cost of the potion, and the cost doubles (exponentially) every time, with cost reset at midnight.
The table below shows the most efficient use of Gold / XP to achieve a certain amount of XP via Instant Finishes per day. To use the table, budget some amount of gold you're willing to devote daily to Composing, and use Instant Finish on the potions in the order listed each day.

The Champions Pack ($40) and Elite Pack ($100) give you +1 Extra Composing Slot (as well as a ton of fragments). This upgrade is not obtainable any other way, and the extra composing slot greatly speeds up composing leveling early on.
Use Potion of Discovery (Find Item 800) or Potion of Supreme Luck (Find Item 1000) during your regular leveling hunts in conjunction with the auto-fragment setting to gather some common frags. It's not enough though, so it's preferred to farm for lots of frag stashes during Global Events.
I don't recommend buying common items on AH and breaking them down.
